Echocardiography is a non-invasive medical procedure that uses ultrasound to examine the structure and function of the heart. It allows real-time visualization of the heart cavities, valves and heart muscle.
Echocardiography is designed to provide information about the size and shape of the heart, to assess how the heart muscle and heart valves work, and to detect congenital or acquired heart disease; it can detect the presence of fluid around the heart and diagnose conditions such as heart failure, valve damage, aneurysms or tumours.
During echocardiography, the patient lies still while a gel is applied to the chest. The doctor moves an ultrasound transducer, which is used to visualize the heart on a screen. The procedure is painless. It is a safe and accurate method of assessing heart function.
The examination is performed by Dr. Tsvetan Kotsev, a specialist cardiologist in Sofia with experience and interest in non-invasive diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases and includes a consultation with a physician.
